COURSE OVERVIEW

Your dream workplace is colourful, light-filled, full of beautiful things: sketches of mannequins dressed in floaty pastels or bold patterns or tailored crisp monochrome, the thrum of sewing machines, rows of hangers holding clothes of your creation – there, soft silk meets cool leather meets fine, hand-stitched embroidery.

Discover a career in couture with fashion design at Raffles.

WHAT YOU’LL LEARN IN THIS FASHION DESIGN COURSE

Work hands-on and develop designs for both ready-to-wear and haute couture collections, using digital and manual tools and techniques. We prepare you for an industry that’s demanding that you’re multi-skilled in these areas.

You’ll explore the garment-making process in full, building technical know-how in every stage, from concept to stitching, catwalk to selling. You’ll work with your collections through production and marketing – and showcase them at our end-of-year fashion show.

FASHION DESIGN IS FOR YOU IF…

You get thrills running your hand over quality textiles, dream in vibrant colour, and keep up to date with global fashion trends and styles religiously.

You’re creative, and you’ve got an eye for beauty and aesthetic detail. You’re up for spending long hours bent over sewing machines, and you’re not afraid to get your hands pricked with needles.

WHY CHOOSE RAFFLES FOR YOUR FASHION DESIGN COURSE?

You’ll work in small groups on presentations that simulate real-world professional environments, and develop a portfolio to help you land an exciting first job.

And, of course, the jewel in the crown is Raffles’ annual live fashion show at Carriageworks, Redfern. You’ll get to present your final range to fashion industry professionals and the wider public.

Plus, eight lucky students are selected each year to showcase their designs on the international stage at China Graduate Fashion Week. Raffles College is the first and only international institute to take part in this prestigious event.

We’re also the only private education provider to showcase its graduates work at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Australia. It doesn’t get much more real-life than that.

COURSE OVERVIEW

The Fashion course is an exciting practice based course that encourages the application of skills, the investigation of theory and the opportunity for critical reflection. It is a broad based course with opportunities for students to explore a wide range of intentions within the area of Fashion in addition to event management, visual merchandising, digital fashion, jewellery and accessory design. Over recent years the accessories market has exploded globally, from couture and designers right down to the high street market, and the fashion industry has seen the potential to build sales by adding accessories to the mix.

The traditional Fashion graduate, proficient in the skills of pattern cutting and manufacturing etc., needs to become a flexible, creative and global practitioner, with capabilities focused on skills acquisition and evaluation. With the advent of social media the business of marketing and PR has changed and Fashion graduates now need yet another set of skills and the course needs to reflect these changes in the Fashion industry. Fashion blogging is now an established profession, the use of social media to promote brands and events, the expansion of e-tailing and successful bricks and mortar retailers all now have an online presence, all this is opening different opportunities for graduate employment.

The Fashion course is very industry focused and as such has very strong links with regional and international employers. The course team have a wealth of contacts in the industry and the shape of the course is directed by changes in the industry and the needs of employers.

The Fashion course is therefore contextualised by global trends in the Fashion industry, specifically within the Asian markets and students are encouraged to take part in collaborative / group projects enhancing their multicultural awareness and strengths as global practitioners.

A key aspect of the programme is employability and students are encouraged to undertake industry experience and to pursue professional links through project work and all other aspects of their university experience. This reflects the Raffles Education Corporation’s Values and Culture statement; promoting professional excellence for employability.

Staff research, practice and expertise feed into the course's qualities and characteristics. These chime with Coventry University's Mission Statement to provide outward-facing research with impact, to provide high-quality teaching, and to be dynamic, global and enterprising.
